A growing number of UK Labour MPs are voicing strong opposition to party leader Keir Starmer’s controversial plans for tighter disability benefit rules, warning that the rushed approach could have devastating effects on vulnerable people.

Several MPs have publicly criticised the proposed cuts, saying they risk repeating the same mistakes of past welfare reforms that left thousands without adequate support. They argue that instead of empowering people with disabilities, the policy could deepen poverty and further isolate those already struggling with daily barriers.
One backbencher described the move as “morally indefensible,” urging the Labour leadership to engage properly with disabled people and advocacy groups before pushing through changes that could undermine trust in the party’s vision for a fairer society.
Disability rights organisations are also calling for a more inclusive, evidence-based process that centres the voices and real needs of people with disabilities — rather than viewing welfare solely as a budget line to trim.
As pressure mounts within Labour ranks, the debate is a stark reminder that real transformation must put dignity and inclusion first — not just on paper, but in policy that works for everyone.
