Probe launched Into SASSA disability grant mismanagement

South Africa’s Social Security Agency (SASSA) is under new scrutiny after allegations of maladministration and irregularities in how disability grants are managed.

The Department of Social Development has confirmed that an independent investigation is now underway to look into serious claims that include delays, unfair rejections, and poor treatment of applicants with disabilities.

For thousands who rely on this vital support, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Many people with disabilities face months-long waits, inconsistent assessments, and little accountability when grants are mishandled or stopped without explanation.

“This grant is often the only lifeline for families already struggling with unemployment and high living costs,” says one advocacy group. “We need answers and real improvements, not more empty promises.”

The probe will focus on how disability grant applications are processed, whether staff are properly trained to handle complex medical assessments, and if corruption or negligence is contributing to people being unfairly denied help.

Disability rights groups are urging SASSA and government leaders to ensure that any wrongdoing is rooted out — and that the entire grant system becomes more transparent, faster, and fairer for those who need it most.
