A Melbourne university student is making it easier for people with disabilities to find accessible places to eat with the launch of a new app called enAccess Maps.
Developed by Alex Uccello, who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair, the app aims to reduce the everyday challenges faced by people with mobility impairments. The platform allows users to search, review, and share accessibility information for dining venues across Melbourne — including details like wheelchair-friendly entrances, seating, and bathroom access.
Frustrated by the lack of reliable accessibility data online, Alex built enAccess Maps to help others avoid the stress and uncertainty that often comes with going out. He hopes the app will grow through community input, encouraging users to rate venues and add missing details.
“People should be able to enjoy something as simple as a meal out without barriers,” he said.
The initiative has already gained attention from the disability community and local advocacy groups, who see it as a practical tool for inclusion and empowerment.
The app is available for free and is expected to expand to other Australian cities in future.
