South Africans can claim considerable medical tax credits—sometimes between R2 000 and R100 000—if they submit complete and accurate documentation, including medical scheme certificates and invoices, and keep records for at least five years.
These credits extend beyond medical aid contributions. Taxpayers aged 65 or older, or those with disabilities (including dependants), are eligible to claim 33.3% of additional qualifying medical expenses and excess medical scheme contributions. For others, the rate is 25%, subject to meeting out-of-pocket thresholds tied to taxable income.
This tax season is a timely reminder for claimants to get organised. Complete records and early submission are key—without compliant paperwork, many eligible deductions may be lost.
While these credits offer welcome financial relief, the claims process can be daunting and bureaucratic. Greater visibility of requirements would help ensure that more people with disabilities can access the benefits they’re entitled to.
