No equality without sign language rights

Deputy Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Steve Letsike, has warned that there can be no real equality without the recognition and protection of sign language rights. Speaking at a government event, he stressed that failing to embed these rights undermines access to education, justice and meaningful social participation for deaf communities.

Letsike highlighted the need for stronger legislation, proper interpreter services and the inclusion of sign language across public platforms. He argued that symbolic gestures are not enough; sign language must be fully integrated into policy and practice.

Advocates echoed his concerns, calling for greater investment in training, resources and national standards. Without these measures, they warned, the promise of equality will remain out of reach for many.
