The learners with disabilities in Pretoria benefited from the recent event in the series of Work Readiness Events which took place on Tuesday, 17 August 2021.
Adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols, 50 senior students heard from industry experts about how to prepare for life beyond school. Topics included how to handle a job interview, drafting of a winning CV and more about accessing university for students with disabilities.
Corporate sponsor of the day, Barloworld Equipment, shared an insightful presentation delivered by Transformation, Diversity & Socio-economic Development Administrator, Musa Mokhobole, who expressed the importance of disability inclusion at the company.
He stated, “At Barloworld, we strive to be an employer of choice and we are also committed and are focused on the well-being of every employee. We have many opportunities for persons with disabilities. Our approach aims to match the candidate with the job capabilities that it requires.” He went on to explain that whilst many of the positions are not suitable for all, they are making an effort to allocate the best vacancies to those with various disabilities as disability inclusion remains a top priority.
Principal Karen Swart stated, “I think the incredible worth of hosting an event like this is like bringing the world outside to the learner. Especially and this time of the year, it brings this incredible motivation to move forward and to look at their marks and where they want to be whilst seeing what they can do. Partnerships like these are going to benefit these learners immensely because they do not always have this connection to the outside world and with institutions. Building on this would be incredible for the future of the youth.”
