Welfare reforms miss hospitality’s untapped inclusion potential

New concerns are emerging as the UK government’s welfare reforms risk overlooking one of the country’s biggest hidden opportunities for meaningful inclusion: the hospitality industry.

By Professor Peter A Jones MBE – Hospitality and Catering News

As Hospitality & Catering News reports, the sector — which includes hotels, restaurants, catering, and tourism — has huge potential to open doors for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. Yet many believe current policy changes fail to properly invest in the training, workplace adjustments, and employer support needed to make this happen.

Hospitality is one of the largest employers in the UK and has roles that could be adapted for people with diverse abilities, offering flexible hours, entry-level pathways, and career growth. But without targeted support, disabled jobseekers remain excluded from opportunities that could help close the disability employment gap.

At Disability Connect, we know real change requires joined-up thinking: policy, business, and communities working together to unlock sectors with untapped potential. Hospitality can be a gateway to inclusion — but only if it’s recognised and resourced properly.
