DWP chief signals possible benefit changes ahead

The new UK Work and Pensions Secretary, Pat McFadden, has said he won’t rule out cutting or changing welfare benefits before next autumn. Universal Credit eligibility, PIP funding, and health-related payments may all be up for review.

Responding to questions, McFadden emphasised that welfare reform will be an ongoing priority. He noted that while the comprehensive Timms review on PIP is not yet complete, other adjustments could still take place in the meantime.

There is concern among charities and disability groups that further cuts could disproportionately affect people already vulnerable, especially those with long-term health conditions. Advocates warn that eligibility tightening or changes to payment rates could make it harder for them to get support.

Critics also argue that transparency, parliamentary oversight, and full consultation should be non-negotiable if any changes are implemented. Many believe that reforms must balance cost-saving with fairness, ensuring welfare policy does not leave people without basic protections.
