Disability rights activists gathered outside UK government offices in Glasgow this week to protest what they call a “hostile and dehumanising” benefits system. The demonstration, led by campaign group Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC), called for urgent reform of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and its treatment of disabled people.

Chanting “benefits are a right, not a luxury,” protesters drew attention to the devastating impact of PIP assessments, benefit sanctions, and long delays in support payments—issues they say are worsening poverty and exclusion among people with disabilities.
Several wheelchair users and carers joined the protest, demanding that the UK government shift from punitive assessments to a rights-based support system. One activist stated:
“This isn’t just about money. It’s about dignity, fairness, and the right to live without fear.”
DPAC and allied groups are calling for an end to assessments that cause harm, and for policymakers to co-create systems that are truly inclusive, accessible, and just.
