Call to rebalance NDIS welcomed

Autism Awareness Australia has welcomed a bold new report from the Grattan Institute calling for an urgent “rebalance” of Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to ensure sustainability and fairness for all.

The respected think tank’s report highlights how skyrocketing costs and access inequities risk undermining the long-term success of the NDIS — a scheme that over 600,000 Australians with disabilities rely on for vital supports and services.

Autism Awareness Australia CEO Nicole Rogerson says families are increasingly worried about the scheme’s financial future and the cracks appearing in service delivery. She has called on state and territory governments to step up and take more responsibility for providing community-based disability supports — especially for people who don’t qualify for the NDIS but still need help to thrive.

“This is not about taking away support from those who need it most,” Rogerson said. “It’s about making sure the system works for everyone — now and for generations to come.”

Disability advocates agree that fixing gaps between the NDIS and mainstream services will be critical to protecting the scheme’s core promise: that people with disabilities can live with choice, dignity and inclusion.

As the national debate heats up, one message is clear — a fairer, more balanced NDIS must remain at the heart of Australia’s commitment to disability rights.
