Cumbrian union fights back against cuts to disabled workers’ support

Union members in Cumbria have launched a fresh wave of protests against proposed funding cuts that could strip away vital workplace support for disabled employees.

The demonstration, organised by Unison and local disability advocates, highlights the potential impact of scaling back Access to Work provisions — the government scheme that helps people with disabilities get practical support such as job coaching, transport assistance, and adapted equipment to stay in work.

Union leaders say the cuts could have devastating consequences for disabled workers across the region, forcing many out of jobs they love and deepening inequalities in an already fragile employment market.

“This isn’t just about funding — it’s about people’s right to earn a living with dignity,” said a Unison spokesperson. “Without proper workplace support, many disabled employees will be pushed to the margins.”

Protesters argue that the cuts also undermine broader efforts to close the disability employment gap, which has barely improved in the UK over the last decade. Many fear that scaling back Access to Work will undo progress towards fairer, more inclusive workplaces.

Campaigners are urging the government to rethink its plans and commit to expanding, not shrinking, the resources that help disabled people contribute their skills and talent to the workforce.
