Disability groups demand real accountability from NDIA

Frustration is mounting as Australian disability advocacy groups call for urgent action and real accountability from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

This week, a coalition of peak disability bodies voiced deep concerns over the NDIA’s lack of transparency, inconsistent decisions, and the mounting burden on people with disabilities who must fight to access the services they’re entitled to.

Many families say they’re worn down by endless paperwork, unpredictable plan reviews, and appeals that take months — or even years — to resolve. For those with complex needs, the consequences of delays can be devastating, leading to poorer health, isolation, and financial stress.

“We need an NDIS that works for people, not against them,” says one advocate. “It’s time for the NDIA to be truly accountable and put participants first.”

The groups are calling for:

  • Clearer, fairer processes for plan reviews and appeals.
  • Better training for NDIA staff to make consistent, people-centred decisions.
  • More transparent reporting on how and why funding decisions are made.
  • A genuine commitment to co-design with the disability community.

As the NDIS continues to grow, ensuring its original vision — choice, control, and independence for people with disability — doesn’t get lost in red tape has never been more urgent.
