DWP under fire over motability u-turn

Disabled people in the UK are hitting back after the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) quietly changed how it handles Motability vehicle funding — leaving thousands facing confusion and uncertainty.

A new report by The Canary reveals that the DWP’s sudden policy shift means some benefit claimants risk losing access to adapted cars and scooters that give them freedom and independence.

Campaigners say the U-turn — which affects people who fail reassessments or appeal decisions — is yet another blow in an already flawed system that often leaves disabled people fighting to prove their eligibility again and again.

“Mobility is not a luxury — it’s a right,” says one disability rights advocate. “Every time the rules change, we’re the ones who pay.”

The Motability Scheme has long been a lifeline for thousands, giving disabled people the means to get to work, school, or medical appointments. Critics argue that the DWP’s piecemeal approach is eroding trust and putting more stress on families already under pressure from rising living costs.

As calls grow for an overhaul of how Motability and disability benefits are managed, one thing is clear: disabled people are demanding stability, fairness, and a system that works with them — not against them.
