Minister champions inclusive special schools

On 14 August 2025, Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, addressed the South African National Association for Special Schools at Anew Resort in White River, Mpumalanga. She called for collaborative strategies to transform special schools into inclusive excellence centres, serving both learners with disabilities and those in mainstream education.

By the South African Government

South Africa’s inclusive education policy, under White Paper 6 (2001), aimed to ensure every learner has access to quality education regardless of background or ability. Yet many children with disabilities still face barriers. The minister highlighted how leveraging the expertise and resources of special schools can enhance accessibility and drive inclusive innovation in the education system.

This initiative signals a vital shift—not just towards compliance, but towards building learning environments where diversity is celebrated and every child is empowered to thrive.
