In a major step towards improving accessibility and service delivery, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially launched its new online disability grant application system. Starting June 2025, persons with disabilities can apply for financial support from the comfort of their own homes, eliminating the need to queue at physical offices.

The digital platform allows applicants to upload supporting documents, track the status of their application, and receive notifications—all through a secure and user-friendly online portal. This marks a transformative shift in how disability grants are administered in South Africa.
SASSA says the move is part of its broader efforts to modernise social assistance systems, reduce administrative burdens, and better serve vulnerable communities—especially those in remote or underserved areas. While in-person services will still be available for those who need them, the online system is expected to significantly streamline the application process.
The initiative has been welcomed by disability rights groups, who view it as a long-overdue advancement in promoting independence and dignity for persons with disabilities.
