Soweto’s Skills Village Radio: Empowering voices in the disability community

In Soweto, Gauteng, an innovative online radio station is making significant strides in disability advocacy. Founded in 2022 by radio personality Tebogo Poopedi, known as Mr TAP, and sound designer Buhlebenkosi Mkhize (Baba Signal), Skills Village Radio aims to amplify the voices of persons with disabilities and foster inclusivity.

Recognising the underrepresentation of individuals with disabilities in mainstream media, the duo established the station to provide a platform where these voices can be heard directly. Their mission encompasses not only broadcasting but also offering skills development and community engagement opportunities.

Despite lacking prior experience in radio, both founders embraced the challenge, learning on the job to create a space that empowers and educates. They now extend this knowledge to others, offering hands-on training in radio broadcasting, production, and related media skills to aspiring individuals, particularly those with disabilities.

The station’s team includes passionate individuals like Princess Sibanda, the human resources manager and host of the Health and Awareness show, and Simfisile Mazibuko, presenter of the Inclusive Insights segment. Their programs address critical issues affecting the disability community, aiming to challenge stereotypes and inspire action.

As Skills Village Radio celebrates its third year on air, it stands as a testament to the power of media in promoting social inclusion and empowering marginalised communities. Through dedication and innovation, the station continues to inspire a society where people with disabilities are fully included, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
